This has nothing to do with this form and I'm always disapointed to read political debate here. We have a conference coming up in a day or so.

Baloney. to put it politely.
I have been self employed as a metalworker and craftsman since 1978. And the "politics" of small business are absolutely central to my making a living, keeping my doors open, and employing people.
No jobs, no blacksmithing.

If we dont discuss politics here, AND at the conference, we are abdicating our rights and responsibilities as american citizens.

Some of us may have the luxury of being employed by somebody else, and just cashing paychecks- I dont, and havent for a long long time.

So, to me, this stuff could not be MORE related to blacksmithing.

This thread is in ''everything else off topic'', and doesn't see all that political to me, I mean it's not Republicans and Democrats bashing it out stuff.....It's addressing the economic woes we all face as citizens an business professionals.....Don't read it...

I'm not opposed to political talk. I just feel it hurts the blacksmith form if people drop in and read some comments and get the wrong impression of what the club is about.

I may not be in the majority, but is is only one mans opinion. There ia a place an time for everything.

I will be there and we may not agree on politics, but that does not mean we can't get along.

Ries,

I wish there was a like button on your posts. 😀

This goes for all your posts in this thread and elsewhere usually.

I agree that in this section of the forum, [EVERYTHING ELSE OFF TOPIC] anything goes, since Grant set it up that way. And I agree that the Economy is worthy of discussion, and with Bruce that it isn't political. Also, the Economy being very close to home as an issue for you and anyone who is making a living in metal work. Maybe it should be moved to [The Business of Blacksmith] section.

*WARNING* I'm going to get slightly political here, don't shoot me, you've been warned. :hot:

Part of the problem lately, on a national level anyway, is that the Economy and Politics have gotten really mixed up. They should be discussed primarily separately and only occasionally should they touch in the national discourse.

Regards,
Tim

Let us make a special effort to stop communicating with each other, so we can have some conversation.

Sorry guys, Craig included, I am a man like yourselves who has been working his ass off just to make a living... Craig, just had a thought... Do you have a government job? Anyway, back to my story: The more money I make, due to the sweat of my brow, the more money the government wants in taxes.

I was actually audited by the employment division to see if I was paying enough taxes! I am a one man show, the only employee of my corporation, and they want to see if they can get more money out of me. Why does the government steal from us who are just working hard to make a living... Not like we get anything out of the @#&***!!! government!! They are rebuilding bridges, repaving roads that do not need repaving, and saying they are putting America back to work... BS:stomp:

If they drop in the "tools of the trade" forum or the "outreach & education" forum, then yeah. But this is the "everything else" forum where any reasonable person would expect to find polictics, religion, & sex.

But you can have a nice virtual hug anyway.:wavespin:

No matter where you go... there you are.

Ries,
I agree 110% with your take on the situation. There is a segment of the population that could care less about the plight of the small businessman as long as they continue to make obscene profits with their special interest legislation, tax loopholes and bailouts. The dilemma is especially problematic for those of us who make a product that while of a very high quality that can last for generations is essentially, at least in the artistic manifestation it takes, not essential. If I need tires for my truck I have no choice but to buy tires. If a customer needs fireplace tools, he can buy cheap imports that are junk and never have to call on me or someone like me. I think it is incumbent on us self employed craftsmen to speak out on this subject. The state of politics in this country DIRECTLY effects my ability to work in my shop ,earn a living, pay all the taxes I pay, hidden and otherwise, and participate in a blacksmithing forum.

I believe Small business is defined as a business with less than 500 employees

It depends on what type of "small" business you're talking about. S-corps get tax breaks for being small businesses but "small" means less than 100 shareholders. Many large businesses qualify as "small" businesses and get this break.
