Pics to follow. This one looks practically unused, with some black paint still on it. about 30" long including horn, about 11" high, 4.25" x 14" face, looks to be forged with hardened steel face. About 120#. Nice ring to it. Any idea what the brand is, and where it hails from? No other markings that I could see, but will clean it up tomorrow. Came with a sweet maple butcher block stump on a steel rolling stand.

Thanks,

Scott

Looks to be a West. They were cast, not forged. I have heard good things about them. They made anvils up to 800 pounds.

I wonder why they have no other distinguishing marks on them like serial numbers, model numbers, etc. I guess that's how the more modern anvils were produced. Any idea when this one would have been made? I am assuming then that this is an American anvil, correct?

You can never tell if the history behind an anvil is accurate, or just myth. The man I bought this from said he bought it from a guy who said the W was for "Westerneist" or"Wienerschnitzel" or some such thing - like it was from some Scandinavian country, or perhaps Germany. I bought it because it looked great, weighed a ton, made a nice ringing sound when whacked, and had no visible blemishes, and was very reasonably priced. I've had great luck recently from machinists, retired auto body guys, and farmers from norhern IL lately.

Got lots of help from Mark. He says it was probably made in the 1930's. Made by West Steel Casting Co. in Cleveland. Cast vanadium steel and a very servicable anvil! I just weighed it: 173 #!!!

I can't be sure it was made in the 30's. The only references to West anvils that Richard Postman (author of Anvils in America) ever found was printed in the early 30's. That reference stated that they were cast from vanadium steel. That being said, noone really knows how long and what years West made anvils.
