And by the way, Tom or Bill, could you possibly post some pics or a sketch of your pot setup? I'd really like to see details like where you vent the exhaust, etc.

Matt I will get some pics of my set up tomorrow for you to look at. I use two venturi burners on mine and am very happy with them. I do use a PID on mine and a single solenoid. I have a "Y" in the gas line coming out of the solenoid, and down line at each burner a small ball valve so I can shut off or open each burner individually. I have my PID set up to shut the solenoid at 1550 degrees. After shutting off it will coast up to around 1558 then start coasting back down. It opens and reignights at 1545. It will continue to coast down to around 1540 before the burner catch the heat and start back to 1550 again.

My pot is made from schedule 80 carbon steel pipe.

Matt if you want to come visit and look at this anytime just let me know. You would be welcome too.

I have a 120V solenoid you can have if you come out.

Those are both very generous offers, Bill. If it were at all feasible, I'd definitely come by for a visit -- but it isn't. I'm pretty far from your neck of the woods. (I just realized that I didn't originally list my location in my profile, so I've fixed that.)

Wondered where you were- yep, quite a ways off. Pretty there this time of year. I got some pics today for you to look at. Basically it is just a big round forge with a pot in the middle of it. I have a 1" kaowool liner on the forge sides & bottom, a 2" layer of Kaowool board on the top w/ a cut out to slip the pot into. It rests on the Kaowool on the bottom. Three pics here and will add 2 more to the next thread.

Next pics for Matt. Could not get these to upload on the first try. Hmmmm just figured out why they didn't upload the first time - wrong format. The level of salts in the pot need to at or below the level of the Kaowool on the lid. Otherwise the top will never melt. Don't ask how I learned that lesson - OK.

Thanks a lot, Bill. That's pretty much exactly what I envisioned; it's just a tad larger than I pictured.

So is the ceramic fiber board a structural member? Does it actually support the pot? I ask because I've found that that stuff to be pretty fragile, especially after it's seen a lot of heat.

How much do the salts expand and contract during heating and cooling? I'm just trying to get a sense of how much salt I'd need.

Thanks for the tip on the salt level. I had wondered about that. That's a very important detail, considering that we want the top to melt first.

The Kaowool board is just used on the roof Matt, just under the SS lid. I used that just so I didn't have to worry about how to attach standard Kaowool. I have never noticed any expansion contraction in the salts really - can't say I have ever paid attentio to it - haven't had any problems in that area yet.

Look at the pics - see the little ears on top of the pot - I can run a bar thru them and just lift the pot straight up and take it out if I want too. So there is just a hole in the top the pot goes in and rests on the Kaowool liner in the bottom of the round forge.

OK, one more question: Does the PID control the solenoid directly, or does the PID operate a relay that runs the solenoid?

PID directly controls the solenoid Matt.
