I have a few tools. I'd like to add a ball punch to arsenal. My thought is to use a ball-peen hammer head, leaving the ball end hard while softening the hammer end (so it can be safely struck by another hammer). This must have been done many times before, but I'm not finding a how-to. So... does someone with some heat-treating knowledge have a process for this? Is it as straight-forward as torching the hammer end to a purple color, say?

Thanks!

Put the ball in a container of water* & torch the flat until it glows. Allow to cool slowly. TEST WITH FILE to insure success before hitting softened end.

*Make sure there's enough water. One way is to clamp the hammer head to a bar & dangle the ball into the slack tub.

That simple.

No matter where you go... there you are.
