Good evening from Boise! I'm honestly not sure what to put here, and sorry if i say or post wrong. My name is Mike, i'm recently separated from the US Navy, i did 4 years total in the navy, 1 year of school and 3 stationed over seas on a DDG. i'm back in Boise to go to school and hopefully learn a valuable trade. I would like to learn to be a black smith because its something that has always interested me, just the whole process of it. i had grandpa who recently passed away who made knives as a hobby and i would like to follow in his foot steps but more of the smithing side. i am looking for anyone willing to mentor me or take on an apprentice because that's one of the best ways for me to learn, its hard reading something and then trying to mimic it as opposed to having guidance and advice, and for someone to point out when i messed up and ways to correct that mess up. thank you again and i hope to be a valuable contributing member.

Hello Mike, and welcome to the NWBA. Thank you for your service, there are a few other veterans, besides me and you, floating around amongst us.

Joff Brian's class was a real good thing from my point of view, well worth the trip and money.

Welcome to the NWBA, Mike.

I know that getting an apprenticeship is difficult, and the only thing I can recommend (with my limited experience) is to either just do some talking or find a hammer-in you can go to. Of course, the meetings at the Cowlitz Expo center are great opportunities to learn from the demonstrations, as well as have the chance to get some experience when there is Open Forge. Since there seems to be a few smiths from Boise, perhaps it would be possible to meet up with them and see what gets pooled together.

My Youtube channel: Cave of Skarzs

Just having some fun messing around with whatever I have a mind to do.
