Hobby level smithing.
I've done smithing demos at civil war re-enactments.
These days its easier to not lug all the tools around. Coal forge, though need to find a good source of coal to replenish supplies. Also learning about gas forges. Built a combo furnace and forge out of a 5 gallon propane bottle and a Micheal Porter style burner (it tilts to either be in furnace or forge position). With that experience, I may build a larger propane forge. I still like the smell of coal smoke. Also as you work the piece, sometimes it get harder to get back inside the propane forge.
So, learning more about casting, and want to keep messing with hot iron.
Would appreciate recommendation of good coal supplier near Tacoma. Tried Fire and Ice supply, and was not impressed with their coal. (mostly graded for heating, too large of lump size).

Hi Dave, I am the guy that was selling the coal at the conference. It is high quality Elkhorn metalurgical coal. I have a couple of tons down in White Salmon, WA. I plan to be stocking it, as well as coke and charcoal. If you would like you can contact me at jkvonmosch@gmail.com, or 509-493-2246.

Just moved back to the area (and my shop) after a decade in DC. Used to be a full timer, always like to chat with a fellow practioner.
best regards,
