Hi. I’m a newbie that’s interested in smithing. I’ve git a forge and a couple hammers. Just need an Anvil, some classes and a Mentor.

I’m currently in Graham, WA. I would like to learn how to make useful implements and decorative things as well as a knife or two. I love the idea of Damascus but really would like to start with the fundamentals and build a solid foundation.

I’m not made of money but would definitely like a sound anvil to start with. I love all of the old leg vises I’ve seen as well.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Robbie

Welcome Robbie. If you're looking for a London pattern anvil you might try the tailgating at the NWBA confrernce in May. However prices for those can be a bit much on a budget. The range of options for an improvised anvil are many, from free to moderate priced. Ancient smiths used stone. Metal is better though and can be almost any large piece that's not cast iron, RR track, tractor weights, truck axles set on end, or drop offs from a machine shop, equipment repair co., welding co. Scrap yard etc. Even a large sledge hammer head can serve.

Hello Robbie.  Welcome.  I'll give my standard response:  a great way to get into smithing is to join the NWBA and attend the monthly mentoring center hammer-ins and conferences.  There's also a swap meet in October, but that's a ways off.

In the Iforgeiron forum, one of the moderators has a belief that the anvils will become available once you start looking.  Not sure how old you are, but if you're willing to drive a bit to get one, your odds will increase.  Try craigslist, auction sites, smithing forums, etc.

Also, there are a number of smiths in the area, and going to the confrences and being willing to start up a conversation with can often end up in an invite to the shop.   Especially if you mention that you're willing to help or bring a six-pack.

I'd invite you down to my place, but it's not really a shop, I'm in the process of finishing a remodel to sell my house ASAP, and I haven't done any smithing for about 6 months now.

Good luck in your search.

as always

peace and love

Thank you billyO for your response.

I def plan on attending. I believe that experience is the best teacher so I’m also willing to help as an avenue to learn.

Beverges... well I must admit beverages and campfires have been some of best ways to get to know people... so I’m a fan of both.

Hope to to meet you soon.

i appreciate your response as well. I have no idea what styles there are out there. I know that Nimba isn’t too far away but I figure I don’t need to spend that much for a new one. I like the idea of some drop tool steel from a machine shop. I’m just itching to get started. I haven’t even warmed up my gorge yet.

Thank you for your input and I hope to meet you soon.

Robbie
