Hi Guys: My name is Lynn Gledhill. I live 8 miles west of Junction City, Oregon. I have been playing with blacksmithing for 13 years, though I currently earn my living as a farrier. I have been to 3 NWBA conferences now. Man, these conferences are a blast!!! I am working on setting up a proper blacksmith shop and am wondering if there is an ideal height for a platen or welding table. I would think waist high would be just right but I thought it better to get some opinions from some of you who have been there.

For me the ideal height is at the same height of my anvil. Most of the use of my platten if for bar straightening and bending. Come to think of it, I use mine for just about everything. I even strike onto it. With that in mind low is good. You should move right from anvil to forge to platten. I try to keep my entire shop at a comfortable height in this manner.
Hope this helps.
Ken
