Hello everyone out there in NWBA land, my name is Ryan and I'm a dude of the age of 24 looking to get into the craft of blacksmithing! I've grown a recent interest in blacksmithing and I hope learn and start tinkering soon. I come from the small town of Port Hadlock, WA a real out of the way place but it's nice and peaceful here at the very least. In terms of experience in blacksmithing I got ziltch nadda none but hey we all started that way right? Right now I'm gathering tools and tid bits to get started such as some hand-me-down anvils and hammers. I'm in the process of building me a makeshift starter forge to start off with, using video instructions I've watched on youtube thanks to a blacksmith by the name of Trenton Tye. Very kind of him to post so many how-to videos for starters like myself. In the end I'd like to craft swords, knives maybe even axes in a fantasy sense. I'm sure a buncha people reading this will read that last sentence and roll their eyes and mutter something like " oh just another nerdy kid. " but that is ok by me. It has a lot to do with the fact I'm an artist with heavy fantasy and sci-fi inspiration, but now I'd like to have a go at making that which I draw on paper! 😛
Well in any case there is my introduction, take it or leave it.

Hey man we are glad to have you... we are mostly a bunch of misfits of some sort or another... yet we all seem to have enough in common to get along:redface:
Everyone one of the master ABS makers at one time or another was a newbi with dreams of making a sword or knife....
Whatever you are, be a good one.

Thanks for the advice I'll be sure and make an effort to do so when I get the chance.

Welcome aboard, glad to have ya!
While bladesmithing isn't really the place to learn blacksmithing there's nothing wrong with it. There're lots of smiths in your general neck of the rain forest. I think Jery Culberson is just south of ya on the peninusla. Grant and Larry are east of you a ways and I'm just a tad north west of ya by about 2,000 miles or so. Heck, I have relatives on Camano Isle. and well heck, all over the Pac NW.
Anywho, don't worry about getting all the "right" tools and equipment, you don't really need more than a hot fire, something anvil like, hammer, something to cut with and maybe something to hold HOT stuff. What makes blacksmithing work is the mind of the smith, not the tools.
What kind of forge are you thinking about? What size, shape, fuel, etc?
Frosty the Lucky.
