This hammer was sitting over in Bremerton, I went and picked it up on Monday... Not sure what its fate will be but at least its safe for the moment...

Wow Brother, what does it need to run it? If its just electricity, I might be interested. After I sell the pneumatic I got.

Is that the hammer that came out of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard about 3 years ago? If so, I think Jess Spromberg was the blacksmith who operated it before he retired.

My fellow worker from Keyport Torpedo Station and I were at PSNS years ago and visited the forge shop. Jess gave us a tour of the forge shop, most enlightening. Keyport had a heat treat facility and plating plant which we maintained, both were scary.

I think Jess got this one a long time ago, like at least 15 years ago. I don't think they had any in the shop that were any where near this small. Their 1500 was their "small" hammer.

Larry, I used to have a hammer like that. Was pretty new for a forging hammer that they made.
Was built in 57 as I remember. Wish I still had it. Never could find a compressor I could afford at the time.
Sold it to Bob Bergman back in the late 90s.
I believe I still have some drawings for it that I got from Chambersburg. If you can use them you can have them.
These are full size blue prints. Will check and see if I still have them. Nice that it has the pneumatic safety head on it instead of an old spring loaded safety.
Sure glad the scrapper did not get that one. Someone can use it. Its small enough and a really good hammer

It was Jess's hammer (or is really, I just moved it over to my yard under the pretense we would make a deal someday) but yeah its not out of the forge shop he worked at... It was removed from a liberty ship so its was probably built during the war.. It looks to have almost zero use but sitting out in the weather has not been kind to it... I need to open it up and get some oil inside and see what its like.

At the moment I think I might take it down to my dads and let him go through it... He has a 50hp screw compressor and several live steam tractors.. He rebuilds old single cylinder engines so going through big rusted iron is just his thing....

So, it's not the one that was in the PSNS auction. Jess and I talked about it, he said it was pretty well worn out. You have the one that he had on the multi axel trailer with the steam boiler? I recall the boiler came out of an old laundry and the trailer was for moving LARGE electrical transformers. Impresive yard art!

Gene, I remember "Ye Old Heat Treat Shop" and the plating Plant. Worked with, not in, both shops from time to time. Scary is understatement. You fall in the vapor degrease tank or one of the plating tanks, bye, bye. Heat Treat with all furnaces running. IMPRESSIVEly warm. A bit of magic there too.

Awe, the old days...
