Here's a taper die I made for Tim Miller in New York.

My "no axle" design:

Cool, wanna bring it over and throw it in my hammer to see how it works?

Huh, I was just looking at the thread on the other blacksmithing site and thinking similar thoughts. I might follow through now that I know I'm not completely nuts.

Mine isn't gonna be as pretty. :p

I don't need to test it to know it will work! Comes with experience. Besides, it's on it's way to New York!

OBTW: That's 4340 that I heat treated in my gas forge. Almost no scale, just a nice black finish. Came out 50Rc with 450 draw.

Yeah, I do that a lot. The goals of the NWBA are different from a private site. Our goal is to "spread the gospel" as it were, not to keep information to ourselves or to compete with other sites.

For us guys new to power hammers how does it wok?
It does have a nice, professional finish 🙂

You rough out the taper "by eye" on the drawing die portion then use the rocker die to finish the taper. The rocker automatically adjusts to the taper.

Sorta like this one:

Mine is a little different than this. Works the same and use it all the time. Great tools

Looks amazing! how much does it cost? a grand or over i bet.

how much room did you leave in the keyway/guide for full articulation?

Maybe I would like to make a lesser version but still functional

Not quite sure what you mean. The keyway/guide is circular, the rocker piece can rotate more than 90º before it rotates free of the groove.

I was thinking I needed to test it, not that the die needed testing 🙂

Thanks for the explanation. I had the same question. Perfectly clear now. Nice work, as always.

As usual,I'm a bit confused! Is that a picture of TWO separate dies,Grant? If the rocker part turns free what is the set screw looking device on the end of the die?Wish I understood machinery a bit more. thanks, Eric Sprado

I figured if I stole an idea from Grant it was sure to work. :mstickle: I followed the instructions for the lower bending die for my press and I use it all the time, still haven't counter-weighted my fly-press, but I'll get around to it.

I think that cap screw on the end just holds the end-plate on to keep the moving die from sliding out the side.

Well, this one was 3" X 6" and lets say it did a lot of damage to $2,000.

Wow that looks great:D.
Out of curiosity would it a bad idea to make the "dish" in the rotating top part to avoid a scale trap? Would the moving part fail due to thinner cross section in the middle?
