I have a 75 ton Gamai Friction Press and am wondering how much clearance there should be between the drive flywheels and the main drive flywheel. Right now there is about 1/16" clearance. I don't have it running yet and turned it up by hand and the friction holds the ram up. Is that normal? How much clearance should there be between the flywheels and the main flywheel? The lever to operate it only moves about 4" to 6" without it running. Is this to close of tolerance and will it wear out the leather used to drive the machine?

Sounds like it's adjusted about right. You don't want to leave it running very much without using it, you will burn flat spots on the leather. The "up" drive has to be engaged a little to keep the ram up. I used to have a machine that had a brake to hold it at the top. I get a new belt every 3-4 years from a local supplier for around $300.00. Mine is 3/8 X 3 X 120 inch.

Good looking machine! What are you planning to do on it?

Thanks Grant. The belt on this one is on the flat and is many layers wide. I can get a new one from the makers of the press, it costs 600 euro and has to come from spain. Pretty pricey.
I have to figure out how to fit it into the work I do, another learning curve. I got a 10 ton manual press and like it a lot and have an old 30 ton Brown Boggs punch press I am learning to use for blacksmithing. This goes in the lineup when I didn't like hydraulic. I tried hydraulic, just didn't like it. This one is going to be fun to use, unlike the punch press with a need to finish its stroke this one goes back up itself, the stroke is finished when it stops, no need to unjam it.
