Couple pictures I found of setting up my 1500 pound Erie hammer. Got about 20 yards of concrete poured, you can see the access trough for the anvil, it goes down about four feet to the bottom of the anvil and there is timber under that. I put in the mast for my jib crane right in the foundation for the hammer. Filled that 10" pipe with concrete too!

Some great shots, more please.... Who's that at the anvil with no safety glasses? Is he really short or is the anvil 4' off the ground?

This was 1982, safety glasses hadn't been invented yet! Or at least "real men" didn't wear 'em!:mstickle:

That's about 8" higher than it ever goes, see the piston sticking out the top? But yeah, lotsa daylight. Used to "pancake" 6"D X 18" 4340 down to 6" high for unlimited hydroplane props. With 125 psi I could hit both ends of the stroke at the same time!

I wish I had elevated my anvil and hammer like you did there. I have been thinking of adding a second sow block to my hammer and maybe lifting the hammer onto higher timbers. Was your jib crane mounted to the hammer foundation?

You must have been speed-reading!

That one DID come out a little high, for sure. The foundation was made for my 800lb hammer and even though I was able to take one layer of timber out from under the anvil, it was still a little higher than I'd like.

I must have been. I thought a crane should be isolated from the hammer I guess I was wrong.
