Hi everyone new to this forum and new to forge welding. I have successfully forge welded 1018 but have had zero success with a36. My big question is what do I look for as an indicator that the metal is ready to come out of the forge? (Propane) forge temp is 2300 to 2500 depending on location in the forge.

Welcome, Jdub. All my forge-welding has been damascus knife steels for the past 5-6 years so take this with a grain of salt, and hopefully others will chime in to confirm or refute my comment.
What I remember is that A36 is a crap-shoot if it'll weld, which is why most folks stick to 1018.
Don't forget that scrap metal (A36) is made by melting whatever ends up in the scrap yard, so who knows the chemical composition of what's in there.
as always
peace and love

Not a knife maker here, but I do regularly forge weld A36. Yes--it has become quite a mixture of all scrap metal but is still very weldable...May see you all up there this weekend if I work up the nerve.. I'm vaccinated but sneaking up on eighty with compromised health has me a bit worried as far as being around large crowds goes...
Know that I miss seeing all of you..
