I just scored a 2''x2'' forklift tine for mere $10 so I can afford to experiment with it. I'm hoping to make some PH dies with some..........Yes, no,maybe so? Thanks..............b

Score! :balanced:

Probably something like 1045 or possibly Cr40 if they're newish. Should work pretty well for dies.

I love it, great material. Anytime I have ever worked it it has always turned out a phenomenal tool.

Thanks Guys,.....Been fooling with it......... Tried the band saw, slow but no problem.
Cut a test piece 3/4 x 2x2''........Quenched in oil at 1800......not hard enough.......Water? more heat? or both?
The really cool thing about this piece is the square tine doesn't end in a ''bill'' like flat tines. It's flat on top and the edges taper to a point, more so on the bottom, kinda like an anvil horn........Bench anvil in the works....:D

1800?!? Fahrenheit?!? Way too high, drop to 1550-1600 maximum. Also, YES to the water.

Well, I tried 1550/1600 in water and it didn't get hard, so I upped the ante to 1750/1800 and still zip???..........1900/2000? It sparked like I thought 1045 should but...

Interesting- I thought I heard they were 4140 or 86 series steel. Shoulda been tough as nails with even a close-enough quench.
I've got some tines laying around that I've been eyeing for the same purpose-dies, etc.

They only remember you when you SCREW UP~!!!

Thanks Larry, I'll pop right over:rolleyes:.........A couple of factors are maybe........I'm a ''cheapskate blacksmith'',( I'm going to figure this out if it bankrupts me) and a small Quench tank (20gal)?? The piece I'm trying to harden is a bench anvil 2x2 x 15'' x 10#.....A one weird thing is the 3/4 x 2x2'' test piece got nice and hard.......:banghead:Thanks ,bm

Dude... I have several chunks of M4.... I think about 20-30lbs each... Make a skookum bench anvil.... I'll give you the steel just pay the $10 bucks for a flat rate box

That cheap enough?

Whatever you are, be a good one.

That's a smokin' deal, ok if I swing by mid July and pick up a little chunk? My Niece is getting married out there.
I managed to get it pretty hard, but I had to go 1900+ to do it.........The bouncing baby 50lb'er bench anvil is one of the results.....70-80% bb test.....15 x 8 x 2''....Nice ring as well...........bm

there's some missing piece of information here, just not sure what. How are you testing for hardness?

I use a file and an automatic center punch........or bash an edge into the layout table to see who wins......State of the art.....;)....When the file doesn't slide after the quench it's a pisser, as we all know.
When I actually did get some good results I got the 2x2x15'' piece upwards of 1900/2000.........and I figured fuck it, either you get hard or bust! I also got off my butt and filled my 50gal tub for the quench, as well as making sure the stars were in a favorable alignment.....The file slid and no cracks........Thanks...b

I think what you have is the spear from a hay lift and it is probably mild. Use SuperQuench.

Forklift tine for sure.......And I finally got it hard, not like HCT but way good enough. It took way more heat than Sam suggested. Usually when I go to that extreme cracks appear...into the heap. The odd thing is it sparks like 1045 should, walks like a duck anyway....I think I'll try superquench for the dies, I'd like to have some anyway............Thanks.....b

that shit is a recipe for disaster! Ht'd at 1900-2000 you grew the grain so much, even "hardened and tempered" it's probably quite brittle or atleast the toughness is greatly reduced, not due to hardness but due to the large grain. I'd be wary of those dies.

It's common knowledge to knife guys, but the file test is BS, and due to your multiple attempts at HT the center punch idea is off too, the decarb layer would negate the punch and layout table bash as it would give out. The file test is very misleading, you could have GIANT carbides all in the wrong place IE the grain boundaries and then butter soft grains like broken shards of glass in playdough.

Easy Sam , or I'll wack you with my cane!:D Speaking of ''old timers'', what else did they have? My old PW anvil has many a nick from hardness tests. All I know is my little bench anvil just underwent a beating from hell to breakfast with a 10# sledge an all it did was ring.......Cry.....And it's hard.I like the thing so I'm not upping to a 20.
Haven't made any dies yet out of that stuff yet but dialing in a better method is definitely in the picture......A friend of mine has some super quench for a test so maybe the stuff will respond at the normal quenching temp....
I respect your knowledge 100%, thanks for sharing it.............bm
