I am just starting out blacksmithing. The first thing is getting everything i will need to start. I am kinda on a "do it yourself" budget but there are things i don't want to go too cheap on. I am building a little forge out of a semi truck brake drum and gonna get a hand crank forge blower. the thing i am needing help on is an anvil. What is a good one to start out with? i have been told to stay away from cast iron. Also where is a good source to get hammers and the different types of pliers?

There are a lot of good books written to answer most beginner questions. The book titled "the Backyard Blacksmith" is likely available at a massive discount at your local Ollie's store.

You can pretty much find hammers and other tools at your local flea market. My advice is to find a local blacksmithing group and attend meetings and ask questions.

Also, whenever possible take courses, or at least one course to save months if not years of struggling on your own.

Author of book titled, "Civil War Blacksmithing", available on Amazon.com

Nathan, there are lots of good, helpfull smiths in the North West area. Attend their meetings, visit with the guys and pay attention. You will learn a lot before you spend a bunch of money and will probably get better stuff too.

You will want to be at the NWBA hammer-in at Longview Washington's fairgrounds. January... The fourth weekend of the month on Saturday... You can meet some great smiths and learn a lot...

The monthly hammer-ins scheduled in 2013 in Longview will be a great place to learn, hands on with many talented smiths. To attend you need to be a member of the NWBA, so join up and come to these events.
