Punching hot bars and finding the centre mark quick enough to do some good.
scrape over the spot you think the mark is with the fire rake and the scale will fall into the mark. (dust from the edge of the forge does the job as well ) do this when the piece is in the fire and have the mark identified before it leaves the fire. no time to waste when the piece comes out.
I only mention this because I see some beginners here taking the piece out and wasting the heat looking for a mark.

Or your mark's not big enough, or you weren't paying attention to how it was oriented when it went into the fire.

What I do: on the last heat before I need the mark I scribe across it with a heavy soapstone mark and pay attention where it is in the fire. The mark will last for one heat and makes it easy to find the punch.

Francis W recomended sharpening a centerpunch like a diamond or pyramid, made seeing the punchmark easier.

so after you have a x point real deep ( enough to cause a shunt later) and the four holes you are heating to punch are all up to heat.. damn I still can't find that mark.

Maybe it's just my eyesight.

john von , I like the chalk method for finding the area but do try the dust method it can happen once you have lost the other mark. in the fire at heat..

Maybe a dab with a 2000F Tempilstik will help with alignment.
