Punching hot bars and finding the centre mark quick enough to do some good.
scrape over the spot you think the mark is with the fire rake and the scale will fall into the mark. (dust from the edge of the forge does the job as well ) do this when the piece is in the fire and have the mark identified before it leaves the fire. no time to waste when the piece comes out.
I only mention this because I see some beginners here taking the piece out and wasting the heat looking for a mark.

so after you have a x point real deep ( enough to cause a shunt later) and the four holes you are heating to punch are all up to heat.. damn I still can't find that mark.
Maybe it's just my eyesight.
john von , I like the chalk method for finding the area but do try the dust method it can happen once you have lost the other mark. in the fire at heat..
