Hello all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. I need to get my welder working so I can fix my junkyard hammer so I can do more stuff. '

I have an old Marqutte generator/welder with an Onan engine (some of you may have seen/heard it at the fall conference). It has a Marvel Schebler carburator and the only markings are "VD" cast into the body and "138 65 F" stamped on the top. I have been unable to locate any specific carb rebuild kit or gasket kit for this specific carb. It seems as if most Marvel Schebler carbs are "VD xx", with xx being some 2-digit number. I'm wondering if mine is old enough not to have a 2 digit number and if so, where do I go for gasket/rebuild kit? I'm pretty sure the carb is what's preventing me from getting this running. Any help would be great.
thanks

Onan engines were used for a lot of things, lawnmowers, welders, orchard sprayers, etc. They are used on Railroad Speeders (2 cylinder). There is quite a following and parts are available. All the gaskets you can make yourself. If it has been sitting maybe the fuel has just gummed up the float circuit (?).

What actually is the problem you are having? Is it an updraft or a downdraft carb? There probably is a governor that will be controlling the engine speed when running. Is there spark at the spark plug? Is there fuel from the fuel pump?

Quite often people blame the carb, but it turns out to be another problem.

Thanks for the reply, Neil. I scrubbed a little more and found the model number stamped lightly and found a carb rebuild kit. It's a downdraft type, and I had it running for about a minute or so, now it runs only for a few seconds if I spray starting fluind in it. Cleaned the fuel pump already. Didn't want to do much with the carb until I kew what kit I needed.

Starting fluid is not a good thing for the engine to run on, there is no lubrication for the rings, tooo dry!!!

Grant had a fuel pump problem with his LongMower, There is a picture here somewhere with the "Gravitational Answer by Grant". Gotta love Enginuity!!

If it wants to run and doesn't stay running, First check fuel supply from the fuel pump to the carb (at the carb). Second check if there is fuel getting into the float bowl (stuck float valve needle??) Third check if a spider didn't die inside and now is plugging the main jet.

Another fine day above the dirt!!

I used to have a Massey Ferguson '50' tractor. It had a Marvel Schebler carburator. It got to the point where it would run out of gas after running for a while. If I waited 5 minutes it would start up and run good.....then run out of gas again.

I took the gas line off and then took off the brass fitting that the gas line screwed into. In there was an in line filter about the size of a cigarette filter. It was all jammed up. I got a new filter and all fixed.

If worse comes to worse you may find a rebuild kit at old tractor sites.

unhook the gas line where it enters the carb and use wd-40 instead of starting fluid start and keep spraying to make motor kind of run hit and miss but you will be able
to see if you have fuel if you do it more than likely is the little shut off valve the carb float operates dirty or stuck closed
