Can anyone please steer me in the direction of John Emmerling's forum article of the ribbon burner on the NWBA site. I must be having a Monday . I know there was quite a discussion including orifice hole size. I've heard say 1/16" for propane is huge. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks, Rick

I think most use a needle valve rather than a fixed orifice for a ribbon burner... that's the way mine is
Whatever you are, be a good one.

I would think an orifice is required in addition to a 1/4" needle valve? I hope I can generate some comments with this question. Also, I would assume the ribbon burner size could be scaled down for a smaller pipe forge? My pipe is 10" ID and 16" long. With double thickness of kao wool (don't know the temp rating), ITC-100 coating, and bricks stacked at each end, I'm looking for suggestions on this design to make it better please. In addition, do the forges using ribbon burners require an escape port somewhere to allow venting of built up pressure or heat? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Rick

Rick the needle valve takes the place of an orfice. I use a piece of 1/8" pipe as an orfice down stream of the needle valve to introduce gas into the blower air stream:) and it works fine. The vent you speak of is at the ends of the forge where the fire bricks go. That is all that is required really. As for the size of the burner I will let someone else make that reccomendation.

Rick, orifice size is important in atmospheric/venturi type burners because it affects the fuel-air ratio and creates the venturi effect, a needle valve will affect the flow rate but not the mix. In a blown burner controlling the fuel flow rate affects the mix because fuel flow and the air flow are controlled separately. I don't know what type of burner you're building so I can't really comment more.

Thanks Gentlemen for your comments. Lewis, I'm building a John Emmerling design ribbon burner however, I think scaled down to fit the 10" dia. by 16" long pipe. Will have a couple layers of kao wool with ITC-100 coating. The floor brick is ground radius to fit. The ends will have stacked brick, until I make a castible door at which time will need some open vent on the side for pressure relief. I would appreciate any other comments please.
Thanks, Rick
