I will bring four 240-lb Papa Rhinos to the NWBA conference in Kelso. Anvils are very expensive to ship, so here's an opportunity to save a bundle on shipping costs. I'll have a Papa Rhino set up next to a forge and you're welcome to try it out. Of course I'll bring touchmarks, decorative punches and anvil stakes too.
The new series of Rhino Anvils are made right here in the Northwest. The steel is an extremely tough nickel/chrome alloy used in rock crusher linings. It's an air-hardening alloy, so after heat treatment the hardness is very nearly uniform through the entire thickness, at about HRC 52. The face is machined. The waist has been made a bit thicker than the original design, and the step has been made a bit deeper. http://www.incandescent-iron.c...../rhan.html

Awesome Steve. I've been drooling over your Rhinos for several years now and even though I'm in no position to buy one yet, It'll be great to try them out.
Curious, does making them here in the PNW, and not having to ship across the pacific, offset the savings of having them made in China?
I look forward to talking more at the conference.
Regards,
Tim

Tim,
Not having to ship from China helps, but not as much as one would like. Ocean shipping is per cubic meter, so ocean shipping on anvils doesn't cost much. The bottom line is that anvils cost a couple hundred dollars more per anvil to make in the USA, but it's much easier to control quality and logistics. Prices will remain the same: Papa Rhinos are still $1250.
I look forward to seeing you at the conference!
