I am part of a shop collective located in the central industrial eastside of Portland. It's fairly large, and has a metal shop, a wood shop, and a tiny auto shop. Single phase power. We've lost a couple of people recently, and are specifically looking for another blacksmith or metalworker (or two) to bring the cost per person back down. A lot of the bigger tools (bandsaws, grinders, welders, sanding booth, forklift, etc.) are shared, and there is a nice layout table. There is enough room for another forging station and toolboxes. Monthly rent has varied from $250 to $350 per person, and we're hoping to get it back to $250 or so. Probably the biggest drawback of the shop is that it's chaotic and usually pretty messy, because almost all of us are part-timers. I guess I should say that we're not desperate enough not to discriminate, meaning your style and needs would have to fit the shop. Also, no tool/supply abusers need apply! I don't like discovering dings in my anvil faces or missing hand tools or that someone used up my gas or steel. I have a 75lb utility hammer that is currently not shared due to bad experiences with a past shop mate but in time the right person could convince me otherwise. Hopefully you are a Portland blacksmith seeking space and synergy. If interested, call me at 503-502-8409.
