I hear the book "Anvils in America" can help identify most any anvil out there but, I am new to smithing, and have already spent a couple of c notes on books, and the buget is depleted. If anyone out there could take a look I have two anvils to look-up. The first one is about 250# and the markings on the sides are gone but the number on the foot is A14837 It looks like a Hay Budden lg. farrier withthe location of the hardy and round holes. The other anvil my neice bought and it is very clean about 140# and has a circled letter "M" and 1985 on one side with no other numbers or markings. They both ring sweet and will give us many hours of enjoyment. Any help will be much appreciated.

The number A14837 does show up in the book and was make in 1902 plus or minus a year...
If it is a 250 lbs. It should have a Face of 4 3/4 x20 in.
Horn of 12 1/2 in.
Hardie 1 1/8 in.
Pritchel 11/16 in.
It should also have some numbers under the horn on the waist on both sides of the handling hole.
Tip the anvil up and look at the bottom. It should have a handling hole in the center of a recessed area from the edge of the bottom.
You might have some numbers just below the face toward the heel... on the off side of the anvil.
If its a 200 lbs. the hardie and pritchel will be the same but the face will be 4 1/2 x18 horn 11 1/2
Bring it to a conferance sometime. May this help you..

Thanks for the I.D. help Clyde. I haven't looked under the bottom yet as the anvil came railroad spiked to a giant 18" square treated timber. It measures out to the 250# dimensions.
