My Dad ask me some time ago to make him some bending wrenches... I figured what better time than fathers day right? So I made these for him yesterday... They are a lot bigger than they look in the photo.. handles on the big ones are about 30" long and they where forged from 1 5/8" 4140 round bar (the small one I did from 1" with an upset at the end for the jaws) Anyway, I guess I am going to have to make myself some now, these are better than anything I got :cloud9:

Wow, Larry, those are really nice. How much for one like the small one but with 3/8" and 1/4" size jaws? 😀

Tim

How did you get the nice tight angles for the jaws on your bending wrenches? What tools did you use?

No real trick here... Just a file and time... After getting the opening nice and square I went back to the forge and using a oversized square mandrel I cleaned up and set the jaws...

Boy Tim the only way I think it would work out is if I made half a dozen or so... Ive got maybe 4 hours in these three but a big part of that is because they where made from 1 5/8 round bar so there was lots of material to move and it takes a long time in the forge..

The little guy if made from 1" again might take an hour to do one but I bet I could do 6 in maybe 2 or 2 1/2... They still wouldn't be cheap though, $50? If I was only making one It would have to be closer to $100 which in my opinion is more than its worth but regardless any less and it would be killing me..

That's cool, I think bending wrenches like those will be dead useful, I just don't have any right now as I get set up again. If you start making them in any quantity, I'll definitely be interested. 😀

Tim

all I had was mild steel 1/4 x 1" Mark recommends case hardening it I have to get to the metal store this week some time. Was more concerned trying it and going through the process with some scrap before doing it in good metal.

Very nice, Larry. Did you do any kind of heat treatment to them?

Larry, now that you have that profile burner up and running, why don't you cut a batch from plate.I cut mine from leaf spring and just welded handles on.

Its funny you should say that... I just came up with the same idea yesterday while I was playing with the burn table... I have a friend who has a pile of grader blade... I thought about burning out a pile of big wrenches and see how it went...

Leaf spring might kind of work, the big thing is finding good material to cut them out of that doesn't cost a mint

Leaf springs work great, profile them out, leaving a tang on to fit a tube, forge the tang down and set it in an appropriate sized tube, weld on and dress

Pictured are some I use, the welded round bar one I usually use adjacent to the vise jaws for bending right angles, it pivots more evenly than the tapered jaw ones.

The other one is specifically used in a jig for turning special curtain rings, the round insert bars came from the centre of car boot gas filled lifters, and they work great, just drilled a close fitting hole for the rods, chamfer and weld the rods in, Had to cut the bars to length with a slitting wheel in a grinder.
