I won the forge and striking anvil at the spring conference auction.
I'm really happy with them, but I have a question, and I apologize as I don't remember the gentleman's name who made them or I might contact direct.
for other's reference the forge is much the same as those in the mentoring center.
He said to run at 3.5lbs and it seems to run quite well at that pressure, for a while. After a bit is starts to... burble? The fire cone is not well formed and the fire seems to be igniting early in the burner. If I shut off the gas and start it works for a bit, if I turn up the pressure it seems to work longer, but it does seem to return. I swapped out my small propane tank mid forge thinking it might be freezing up, but doesn't seem to be correlated. Maybe a back pressure problem? It works, but I'd like to correct the occasional wonkiness.
The burning is welded into place with a few tack welds, easy to cut at move about if needed.
On my purchased forge (cheap one, Mr. Volcano, that is another story) when that happens I adjust the air and it seems to calm down. The new (better for various reasons) doesn't have air adjust and is running at full air, so there is that. Maybe I need to adjust the gas jet size?
Any thoughts before I go all "I gonna start changin' everything"?
Thanks.

If it is the type of propane forge used at mentoring center you adjust air by rotating the orifice.
That coming from a smith who HATES propane forges. When I first joined there was not PROPANE forge at conference. If it weren't for Berkley Tack there wouldn't have been a single coal forge.. Thanks Berkley!

I agree that I'd like to see more coal, and was happy to see a couple of coal forges.
I don't have much experience with coal/coke and am working to "volunteer" at the Brooks powerland smithy to get some. I do have a (couple) of small coal forges, but need to know more about how to use them efficiently (without just burning up my iron)
When you say "rotating the orifice" do you mean the pipe that has the hole drilled that introduces the propane? Are you thinking the gas is not going directly down the pipe of the burner once leaving the drilled hole? If this isn't clear I can try to get some pix.
I really appreciate the response.
Thanks
