Just scored it this morning. Dimensions: 26" overall length, face is 3.75W X 15" L, horn is 10.75" long, 9.125" in overall height. The number 7 is on one side of the square hole just under the base of the horn, and the number 17 or just 7 on the right side. Not sure...

Any idea what this anvil was primarily designed for and when it was made? It weighs about 114 # according to my scale. There are what look like additional numbers/letters on the base in front but I cant make them out.

Here are some pics and identifying numbers:

And just under the Budden logo on the side there is an 8 and then about 2-3 inches space and then another 8.

Hmmm.......

You need to know the numbers (and any letters) on the front of the foot the determine the year of manufacture. A cup brush on an angle grinder and a quick wipe with boiled linseed oil might be able to help you see the text.

Thanks, I'll give the linseed oil a try. BTW, do you know what the two 7's under the horn mean?

Thanks,

Scott

Thanks for the input. I may have to buy that book though. I've read some stuff on the web about Budden anvils - they have a pretty good rep. But since I know nothing about smithing I need to learn and read and "do" for a while

I visited Powell Books in Portland Saturday and they had 12 copies of Anvils in America in stock. I believe they are around $60.00. Worth every cent! You can order on line.

Richard Postman believes that the numbers on the front of the waist was an inspector's code stamping.
