That's a nice practice set Dave. Why don't you save that set for me and start on the next one!! Holy smokes man-that is a NICE set of punches. All the neat ones that I keep seeing in the "animal head" books and never get around to making!!! Good work!!!!! What did you make them from??See you at Longview, Eric S.

I was pleased with them. Learned that I need tongs while using them- my glove gets way too hot before striking. Got tongs that work great and the punches work! I love it when something works 🙂

No idea. I just drew out what I thought I wanted and dove in. I am still learning the positive/negative thing. Some of these do not function as well as the others and require a very heavy blow to imprint in the high yellow steel.
I used broken tools for all of these and just used annealing, files, emery cloth and a belt sander. Most of my strikes are made with the punch tilted [again, I need more experience] and aren't usable: i over-strike with a different punch to cover the bad impressions.
I am making some more and will probably use coil springs for the material and make them 10" long to keep y hands away from the heat while lining up and getting the punch straight before striking.
Maybe some others can add their techniques and help us both out.

I like the looks of those, I can see where some might not work quite like you or I would want unless they were used with a press (yeah right) because of the type of design, but I think they all look good. Mind you, I am just a beginner myself and know next to nothing. What I know is that Hot metal burns and can be shaped. Other than that ... I just try and have fun with what I do. :help: :bounce:
