I had a rabbit once who could do that!:giggle:

On the serious side; that is really cool! I often had problems with the extrusion screwing something like that up. Do you forge a taper first?

OK OK, I thought I'd whip up something quick and messy so you lumberjacks would quit breaking my balls......Cry Try putting one of these in the old wazoo............

I watched George Dixon make one of these once with a treadle hammer........2+ hours, that didn't appeal to me much, 10 in 2hours more better

These little buggars must have a name, I know not...................bm

Now that's sweet! Forge welded, right? Right?

Forge welded right.......I did say it was Q&M.......The taper is the tricky part.....too fat big sprue, too lean lumpy orbs.........clients like em, but not as much as fucking twisted baskets:poop: (short rant) ...............bm

That's really cool, Bruce! Kind of looks like soybeans 😉 What kind of steel did you use for the dies and did you use a press to form them?

Twisted baskets made with sharp, cold-finished steel and MIG welded together? :giggle:

That particular ornament is pretty old, it's used in many old wrought iron pieces........
The bulk of the steel dies is mild, only the upper most part of the dies is tool steel , and I can't remember what it is, but it was good........They are for the air hammer......You have to turn the bar constantly to get it to form correctly. A press would be too slow.....bm

I think I saw that same demo. That's when I realized blacksmiths are nuts. I'm nuts too, still have the duplicate piece I ran home and made after the conference. Dixon was cool though, he really drove home the lesson that it's all made up of little steps and if you can keep each one in line your result will be sweet. Still, only made one of the dingleberries.

Dixon is cool...no argument there........I love ''By hammer an hand''......The prime function of a business is to make money........For me blacksmithing is an ing not an ism...that's how I feel about it, not everybody is in it for a livelihood. Those of us who choose to make there living at traditional only have my respect for sure....bm

Wish I had that tool for when I did these for a crown for a cabinet for a store a few weeks ago. I did these with a v spring fuller and then rounded the berries up. Yes, they are berries or seeds and was used alot in old ironwork usually incorporated with flowers. I'm glad I only had two sets to do.

So what was the process? Draw out a taper and then roll it in the tooling? Or?

Very nice job on the crest !
I explained a bit about the tapers and such above.
The first set of these dies I made is pictured.........got the tool steel hot, closed it on the master wazit and bang bang....a little crooked but in the ball park. The master shown wasn't used on this die, but the scenario was similar........The master shown is made up of drilled ball bearings captured on a 3/16 welding rod, the first one was turned in the lathe. The PH set was made because I needed to make em out of 5/8 stock instead of 1/2, and also because my left hand is.......lazy

A bit of a wazit, fished out of my scrap pile. Not as many bobbles to make, and I know them as pods, although no doubt there is a proper name for them as they seem to come in different numbers of bobbly bits.
