Greetings all,

I am a new blacksmith, well, more like a newbsmith at this point. Anyways, I am looking for a post vice. A 4" will work fine and I don't have a lot of $$ to spend on it.

Thanks from a newbie,
Ron

You NEED to fill in your info page so we know where you are...... They show up around here(Oregon) with some regularity. I usually have one or two to sell or trade at the NWBA Conference...

Hello, rlevine
I’m going to offer you some advice on leg vices, I’m not the most experienced member on this board so maybe they will cover my incomplete information or any error I make. First the width of the vice is not what you’re looking for it’s the weight, if you need a vice for light work a light vice will work fine, however if you use it for forging, twisting or even holding heavier stock than it is designed for you will soon have junk, and it will prove unsatisfactory while you destroy it. This is just my opinion but if you’re just starting out and you expect to do anything but light work don’t look for a vice that is 4 inches wide, look for a vice that weighs 50lbs. or greater it will hold up until you just have to have a larger one.

Greetings all,

I filled out my bio info. 🙂

I don't do heavy work. If I need to hammer on something, I use my anvil. Mostly, I need the post vice for holding stuff for me rather than something to beat on at this point.

I used a 4" in the past and had great luck with it.

Cheers,

rlevine,
Oops, somehow I got the idea you were new to blacksmithing, I’m forever jumping to conclusions, sorry. My opinion was aimed at someone with little or no experience, obviously you know what you want. Experience is the best teacher, not the ramblings of some old fool. I’m sure you will find the vice you’re looking for. The people local to you on this forum will probably be the best guide for one nearby. Good luck.

Robert - You were correct in thinking that I am new to Blacksmithing. However, the stuff I do is rather small compared to a lot of other people's work.

I don't have a power hammer or really any of the fancy tools that a lot of smiths have. Just a hammer, forge and and anvil. Currently, I am in the process of making tongs. I have one completed set and a second set about half done.

Mostly, I am interested in being able to make the tools that I need for my armour making hobby. I have been doing that for about 10 years or so now and it is a lot of fun.

Anyways, Thanks guys for all your ideas, opinions and help on this.

With regards,
