If they don't have any thick plate lying around, they might have some deep I-beam cutoffs that have a web that is big enough for your purposes. Some of the large span steel buildings had big I-beams.

Off topic I guess, but one of my favorite things about blacksmiths is that are not tool snobs. A lot of the auto mechanics I've known wouldn't even talk to you if you didn't have Snap-On tools. Some blacksmiths have Harbor Freight angle grinders, some have Metabos, and some have both, but nearly all of them are willing to explain why they have what they have, and accept that something else might be right for someone else.

Today i made a new friend at gold coast erectors in camarillo, Ca. One of the structural ironworkers at my job gave me this guys number. People amaze me. First, it was nice of the Ironworker to give me the number, second, the guy i talked to owns this structural steel business was super cool.
I asked the guy if he had any drops of one inch plate in the size i need. He said he had some stuff but it was gonna cost me. i told him that was fine, he quoted me a price of $40.00. He said he would go out to look and see what he had and call me back. He called me and gave me directions to the shop. When i got there he took me to the shop, we talked some shop, he showed me the piece of plate and told me i could have it for free! I was taken a back. I thanked him up and down and offered him money, he refused. He asked what kind of stuff i make and asked for a card!
I went out to the truck and grabbed a damascus knife i made and gave it to him. He was stoked! I know it seems like no big deal, but when people go out of their way to help someone they don't know it restores my faith in humanity. I think i made a friend.

Cybo, those dynasty's are the dogs bollocks! I have heard those things are the thing to have. I like my syncrowave, and my miller 180, when i get some extra cash i am gonna buy a millermatic 252. But my favorite purchase is my hypertherm powermax 45 plasma, that thing is genius! Of course it enabled me to talk the wife into letting me buy a nice speedaire 80 gallon compressor.:D
