I know this is a can of worms.... But I have little hope for us as a county. I see things everyday that make me want to move to a remote area and just hide from the crazies. We are "owned" by a corrupt government that in turn is owned by global biz... I dont think we have it in us to stand up and fight....

I do not share optimistic view that the current system can be saved... Salvation shall come but probably not in our lifetime and only after complete collapse. America as it was 50 or even 25 years ago is dead. Our children might live to see a "free" country but our generation is fat, lazy and will lie down and die before they put up resistance required. We are owned slaves... The world laughs at us when we call ourselves "free" and shout of our freedoms... The last free American died in the 20th century.... When the time comes to stand... I will stand.... And I will be slaughtered with the few would would rather die with there boots on. We will be called radicals and extremists... We will be labeled as crazies and nut-jobs... When the truth is we see the truth and will not shoulder the burden of a tyrannical government...

"But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever."
John Adams 1775

"Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature.... If the next centennial does not find us a great nation ... it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces."
James Garfield, the twentieth president of the United States, 1877

Whatever you are, be a good one.

You are not alone in your views, but alot of us have learned to keep our mouths shut in public and slowly get the hell out of dodge as it were. If you speak to loudly in this day and age of "Homeland Security" you will find some agency crawling up your nether regions and taking away your rights. Lets face it we are not really free anymore, the days of being able to go out and stake out some empty land and make something is gone. I really dont think the Govt and Country we live in now is what our Founding Fathers had in mind when they created it.

You are both correct. We as a nation have been fed food that has been geared to make us fat and Lazy ... we are the only nation in the world that lists "High Fructose Corn Syrup" as a main ingredient in almost everything we eat.

We are also close to the only nation who doesn't seem to want to buy products made by our own Country settling for buying stuff from companies that have put our american businesses ... out of business ... Walmart, Costco, etc etc ...

America has been nurtured as if they were Sheep to the slaughter ... and you can see it happening right before our very eyes! Our presidents and congress have taken our rights and freedom and sold them to other nations because of their greed. Look at the programs we watch ... Simpsons and Southpark and what the nation watches when they get home ... now that's educational ... Look at how we run our lives ... we've been trained to fail ... trained to accept mediocrity ... Trained to laugh at our idosyncracies instead of learning how to deal and move on with them ...

It is up the us Americans to change what is happening but I fear it is too late for most because like what Larry said ... we are too lazy and don't think we can do anything anymore. There are too many people who will "Buy from Walmart" because "They can't afford to buy american" and that is what's wrong with our nation ... when we change that attitude ... then we will change where this nation is going.

It is also up to us Americans to dictate to Congress that we need for them to be on the same page as society ... no more retiring after 5 years and getting full bennies for life ... you all get the same bennies all the other Americans do ... that way you will be more apt to actually do your jobs correctly ... pretty much BS that Congress gets that Perk ... and WHO passed that??? It's crazy stuff like this that's put our country in the place it is ...

*Gets off soapbox*

Shakes head ... ooo, don't get me started ... LMAO ....

Uhhhhh-Just in case you've forgotten: It WAS NOT Empty land!! It was somebody else's land and we took it. I'm not trying to diminish the points of discussion about our country being in trouble but the land taking deal is a separate issue.....

Everyone everywhere took the land originally from someone. What I was saying is that I see large tracts of land that nobody is using, that is either used by the govt ( and ofc the govt sells the rights to log there but not live ) or owned by the state or huge logging consortium's. The only place I know of where you can do that still is parts of Alaska. I see hillsides all over that I would love to be able to plant a home on but cant. As I was saying the day of being able to do that is long gone.

Thats ok David- I'm american with lefist/socialist/anarchist/wierdo leanings, and I find this kind of thinking mystifying.

America now is "free-er" than it has ever been.
If you read history, the good old days quickly lose their sheen.
It doesnt matter which category you complain about, we are better off right now.

Government, for the first 150 years or so, in the US, was incredibly corrupt, and for sale to the highest bidder- ever hear of Boss Tweed?

Business was ruled by monopolies, olgiarchs, and market manipulation like you would not believe.

Employees were machine gunned for talking about unions.

Taxes now in the USA are the lowest they have been in 50 years, and we have the lowest business taxes and least regulation of any of the industrialized nations.

The playing field in the USA is more level now than it ever has been.

How "free", exactly, were those native americans who used to live on that empty land?
or the chinese who built the railroads, or the jews, blacks, or asians who could not own houses in many neighborhoods, like Seattle's Broadmoor neighborhood until as recently as the 60's.?
What about women?
They have only been allowed to vote for 80 years- my own mother was born a second class citizen in the USA.
and in most states, it was legal for a man to rape his wife until the early 70's.

We have more freedom now, in most every category, than we ever have. Its easier to become wealthy, healthy, or just poor and happy in america than anywhere else on earth.

We dont know how good we got it.

PS- the last legally homesteaded property in the USA was in Alaska, in about 1974. There aint no free empty land up there nowadays. Just places where it takes em longer to kick you off than others.

I saw a ferrari the other day that nobody was using. My freedom was seriously impaired because I couldnt just jump in and drive it off, but not half as much as my freedom would have been curtailed if I HAD taken it.

With you there Ries. I SO believe in that. My own "secret to contentment" is to try to be happy with what I've got. At heart adverts and s**t like that are all about making you insecure with what you've got, or your "lifestyle", and to try to convince you the only way to "get better" is to consume their product.

I do of course make a massive exception to this rule of mine when it comes to TOOLS. The only cure to this condition is more and bigger tools.

I ask the same question as Larry quite often. What does the future hold?

I get a completely different answer. Unfortunately, it's not much cheerier.

I don't think the threats we face will allow us the simple and noble solution of dieing with our boots on. We hold onto our self image of economic and political leadership in spite of the fact that we're losing ground in both areas.

Even the most impoverished Americans live lives of luxury compared to much of the world. This is made possible by the vast disparities in wealth between our consumers and foreign producers, but that gap is closing. Sooner or later all those hard-working asian electronics assemblers are going to want to watch some tv after work also. "Sorry, we can't sell you this tv for $99 because we're watching it."

We don't pay many of the environmental and social costs of our cheap luxury goods. We bemoan the cost of the gulf oil spill clean up but we've cheered the last thirty years of deregulation that kept energy prices low and partially led to that disaster.

There's a reckoning to come, but it's sure as hell not in the form of jack-booted government soldiers kicking in your door.

That's the cynical, angry left wing perspective. Starting from the point that we don't know how good we've got it and not doing very much to keep it that way.

I'll "do" just about any controversy on a forum but generally avoid politics. That said, I again SO agree with the above. Coming from my side of politics I kinda don't think in terms of "English" or "American" or "Pak ........ Me? we're all human beings and deserve the same chances in life. If theres one thing that get my back up its tribalism that says "we're special, you're not". This includes nationalism, religion, cliques, social groups etc etc etc. There's absolutely nothing in our DNA that makes us muslim, american, left or right wing etc etc. Every last man woman and child of us is a HUMAN first and foremost. Tribalism nearly always leads to war of one scale or another

No frigging politics!

That's the rule on many forums. Things often end in flame wars. I would like to keep this forum open to anything (this, of course, is a rather liberal view), but I'll monitor it closely. Play nice! Respect others.

The rules:

Share everything.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Always say please and thank you.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt someone.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.

“There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but then there are others who, with the help of their art and their intelligence,
transform a yellow spot into the sun.” ~ Pablo Picasso ~

Well, leaving politics completely out of it-
Of Course America has a chance.

It will be just fine.

Its just us pesky human beings that are in danger of dying off- we are just a flash in the pan.
In geological time, we are an eyeblink, so, if we step back and dont take it all quite so personally, America has a rosy future.

I know no Politics, but actually I dont think anyone has gotten nasty or said anything bad or tried insulting one another. Not even really a heated debate....just a discussion about the future of the country. LOL I think we got more heated over work related topics than this one 😀

I'm with you Mr. Hyde..... On my good behavior here. Damn I'd hate to get lynched from one of the beautiful oak(chestnut) trees in my own yard.......

"Under the spreading chestnut tree the mouthy smithy hangs"..... Ahh yes. Love classic poetry...

How long can I avoid a good political debate, anyway?

My anal-ysis:

After WWII The U.S. ruled the world (economically). Our productive capacity was at it's peak and everyone else's was bombed out and in ruin. Through the 50's and 60's we were flying high. But that sort of imbalance couldn't last. Now we've been fighting it for 30 years, but it wasn't because we were so smart, we were kinda in the right place at the right time is all. We'll never be in that position again, no matter who is in charge. We need to get used to a new world order. At one time the north enjoyed such an advantage over the south, but things will always balance out. We need to understand that we are no more entitled than anyone else. I think Germany had that view at one time.

We raised a generation who think they are entitled while the rest of the world is fighting hard for their share. Yeah, we need to wake up. India has more honor students than we have students. In the 1500's, Spain was the richest country on earth. Shit happens!

All we can be certain of is change, and people hate change. Things will never be the same again! Actually, they never were.
