Its interesting you bring up Germany, Grant.
Because only this year, Germany, with a measly 82 million people, finally was knocked off its post of #1 exporter in the world by China.
Now, while I agree with you in principle that its unrealistic to expect that the USA, with only 5% of the world population, can be Number One in manufacturing, as it once was, forever- Germany offers an interesting example of how a country CAN be a manufacturing, employment, and financial success far beyond its size would seem to merit.
And what Germany does differently than the US, so that it gets such high wages, low unemployment, and healthy domestic manufacturing sectors, are interesting things to consider here.
Of course, much of their success is due to "socialist" policies like government banks that intentionally support small business, a stock market and business ownership system of laws and taxes that, again, supports local manufacturing, over, say, investment bankers and hedge funds, and similar policies that would be unpopular with the Wall Street Journal and Fox News.
Germany requires, by law, that companies have union representative on their boards of directors.
Germany wont let YOU decide you are a blacksmith- you must complete a government approved apprenticeship before you can work as one- which sure wouldnt be popular here, but is indicative of the way they insure quality in many fields.
Germany subsidizes education far more than we do, and has extensive unemployment and job retraining programs that wouldnt fly here.
In fact, almost point for point, the Germans do all the stuff that the american conservatives say will cripple business- and yet, their business sectors, except for finance, are stronger than ours- not stronger proportionally, but out and out more profitable in dollars, in many cases.
Kinda makes you think.
If you are, indeed, inclined to thinking.

I like modern Germany, well maybe not there excessive love of "order", but it's a pretty fair place .... and it works economically, it's people have a VERY good standard of living ... what more could I ask?
I also love Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey culture as well
And Italy .....especially the FOOD (and the sound of the language, and the history, and the passion, and the weather, and the style, and the island of Stromboli, and......)

Ries: Of course all analogies fall apart in the end, I was just looking for a snippet. We seem to be getting the worst democracy has to offer. What happened to "Of the People, By the People and (most of all) FOR the people. 'Course now our Supreme Court has declared that corporations ARE people with all the same rights but few of the responsibilities of citizenship.

Coming from the RIGHT side of the spectrum..:D...
There is a lot to agree with here. Which confuses me, cause Rush done tolt me...
I'd like to see small govt in our time, not so small as to be ineffective but not so big as to interfere with what I'm doing. Hows that for clear cut? And it can happen if we discuss politics and religion in our homes and among friends and aquaintances in a fashion as is happening here.
Socialistic programs such as road building throughout the nation are just fine in my view and I am happy to pay the tariff for them. I get a little miffed with toll roads 20 yrs after being paid for. I am grateful to have a strong military, but lets keep an eye on the leaders shall we. Young men should be trained in the ways of war as well as peace. Expectations should include the Army and the Peace Corps.
In other words lets explore the Classic Liberal. A lot of what is considered conservative or libertarian thought is more or less classic liberalism. In this view we think that each individual is on his own and the govt is to support our endeavours to become whatever we can but to not interfere in our success or failure. Modern liberalism likes the idea of a nanny state. This begins with FDR for a particular landmark in our political structure.
To study the competition, learn and apply to become better is the human way and seems to have been discarded by American politics somewhere along the way. Stridency seems to rule us rather than well reasoned thinkers. I am certainly not as well versed as many are on this forum, and I enjoy reading disparate opinions in order to arrange my own opinion.
I would like there to be policies that favored small U.S. manufacturers. I would like US to keep our nose out of others business, especially mine. I'd the like U.S. to be back on line as a force to be reckoned with whether or not we are the largest or best. It'd be nice to just be as good as we can. We get to vote. I voted against Obama, not for McCain. Same as I voted against Kerry and Gore. I'd rather vote FOR someone like Joe Lieberman or Teddy Roosevelt. I also think that we need to send a bunch more folks like our Dr. NO (Coburn) to Congress to pay our bills off. We can always add some to the budget later when we have the money.
So in essence I say yes we have a real GOOD chance. Nobody is dictating who to vote for but it does feel a lot like rigged elections when I get in the booth sometimes. None of the above would be a nice option. So lets get some bonafide leaders to go to Washington.

It does feel like that. I voted for Bob Barr in the last elections and my friends said I was throwing away my vote. They may be right but when enough people throw their vote away it will change. I would rather throw my vote away consciously than vote for some wall street puppet like McCain or Obama. It doesn't matter who everyone else is voting for, people need to take personal responsibility for their vote and feel good about their vote even if they are "throwing it away".

Interesting web site...
When I looked it showed each tax payer in the US's share of the US debt... Was $124,000....
This is one thing that scares the heck out of me...

gotta agree with Grant , Ries and that British pinko liberal commie death panel supporting david.
I loved the Somalia vid:)
"That until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned: That until there are no longer first-class and second-class citizens of any nation; That until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes; That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race; That until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained"
