In the words of Josh Billings,
"Taint the not knowing that adds so much to the colossal sum of human ignorance as the knowing so much that ain't so."

Grip the cold end. Hit the hot end.

This might seem like a foolish saying for someone that makes things by hand for a living, but it is some thing that has stuck with me for all these years. When I first decided that I wanted to be a guy that was a maker, it was working in wood. I can't remember the exact piece was, but it was most likely generous to say that it was less that perfect. I was quite proud of the piece and showed it to my uncle. He is/was the type of guy that came across as the dumb hick farmer, but for those that knew him he was a bit of a legend, a very bight fellow. Anyway I showed him the piece and he looks at it, and he said in a kind way "If it don't look store bought, It ain't". I was shocked, but I also really respected the guy, after a bit of thinking I realized he was right. I've never used the excuse that something could be less than my best because it was hand made.

"Your mother never said it was gonna be easy."

I tell my students this when they whine about something, I did learn to be careful who I say it to after one of them told me his mother was dead. Life is hard for some of these kids. Todd

It is easy to get everything you want, provided you first learn to do without the things you cannot get.

"In the END ( as in Judgement Day) the only good deeds for which you will be rewarded, are those you did for somebody and they didn't know it". I've rarely been able to do that. I'm pretty known as a good guy who helps his fellow man,but they usually know it was I who helped..... I, like most of us,wish I were a better man.... Eric S.

That last one is sort of a corollary to the great line from Glengary Glenn Ross-

"History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it."

~ Winston Churchill

And he did.

“There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but then there are others who, with the help of their art and their intelligence,
transform a yellow spot into the sun.” ~ Pablo Picasso ~

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

~ Winston Churchill
